Keep Calm and Carry on Art and Doodle Ideas

Doodling is word often associated with distraction time wasting and lack of focus when it fact it is exactly the opposite!  Much research is now available on the topic of how doodling impacts our thinking, our creativity and how it can effect how we feel.

I have always used my doodling as a place of peace and escape, whilst waiting for someone in a coffee shop, or whilst on a plane, a distraction during meetings or talks, or with my friends in a group. To me, doodling is a joyous and purposeful action. Having doodled with hundreds of people in my group art making sessions over the years, I witness this:

1) People find it very self soothing

2) They lose track of time

3) They do not want to stop

4) They love what they have created

5) It wakes up how they notice pattern and design in the world around them

Doodling can be very many things and I will bring you a few start up ideas on how to begin on this page.

The Magic Dot

Every piece of artwork starts when a pen or brush or twig touches the page !!! and makes a mark or  A Dot. That Dot is Magic! You can stretch it along the page and what do you have?

A Line…….
and guess what, that line can stretch, wiggle and bend and look very different. That line can travel on different journeys/paths in all sorts of different directions too, it can be thick, thin, heavy or light, let's take a look.

Remember, a line ALONE is just a LINE, when you give it some friends you create a PATTERN!!
So lets make a start by creating a place to find out more!

  • Find yourself a pen and piece of paper.
  • Make yourself a squiggle on the page with some loops to fill in.
  • Choose one of the lines ( above) and then all you have to do is remember your most important design word in doodling which is "REPEAT".
  • Fill in the spaces with the line you have chosen ( this is straight line) and you can change direction a few times too

Let's try combining some lines on the page.

Practice making your lines thin and thick, then practice making them close together as well as further apart.

You might even find some different colour pens in the house !
See you tomorrow for further adventures with the Magic Dot !
